Xena
Xena is a blind red roan mare. She wasn’t always blind, we think she became blind after a pullback accident with her halter. Xena came to Happy Tails in 2017 from the reservation. She has some trust issues but once she gets to know you, she is a very friendly horse. Xena’s forever home is Happy Tails.

Sonata-Sponsored Monthly
Sonata is a 25 year old paint mare who came to the rescue Sonata from Nebraska. Sonata’s previous owner had some life changes and had to move across the country and couldn’t take Sonata with her, so she contacted the Rescue. Sonata used to be a broodmare in North Carolina where she met her previous owner. Her previous owner worked at the barn where Sonata was a broodmare at. She requires a high calorie diet to maintain her weight since she is a “hard keeper”. Sonata came to the rescue with her pal William as sanctuary horses. Sonata is newly diagnosed with Cushing's and is on a medication called prascend, she gets it every morning in her special feed.

Lori
Lori is a blind 10-year-old quarter-horse mare who came to us last summer. She was pretty thin when she arrived but you can see what good food and care can do. This girl does not currently have special feed needs but does have some special farrier needs due to an old unknown type of injury to her hind leg. This is not painful, and she moves well. She can be a little nervous around new people

Hankie-IN FOSTER
Hankie is the sweetest mare who has had a rough go before coming to us. She is SMART and was a proven cutting horse in her prime, she knows her stuff! However, we received her through a neglect/starvation seizure over a year ago. We have rehabbed her through a severe case of founder/laminitis, and a handful of secondary medical issues. Because of this we currently have her at a boarding facility.
She was light riding sound and now seems to have some SI pain we are trying to relieve. She currently has 2 meds she takes daily. Gabapentin for the short term, Equioxx for the long term.

Chili
Chili arrived at Happy Tails in the fall of 2024 after her owner noticed she was running into the fences of her pasture and vision issues. After she arrived, she went to the vet so we could figure out why she was having trouble with her vision if there was any way of reversing it, and if she could be adopted. Sadly, after an extensive eye and vision exam, it was determined that Chili had developed equine uveitis and that it couldn't be cured. Chili joined the sanctuary horses after that vet visit and is now best friends with Xena who is also blind and helps Chili navigate her surroundings as her "seeing-eye horse".
